{"id":13,"date":"2021-03-12T18:30:07","date_gmt":"2021-03-12T18:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.media.unc.edu\/suicideprevention\/?page_id=13"},"modified":"2021-11-29T16:20:15","modified_gmt":"2021-11-29T16:20:15","slug":"module-1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.media.unc.edu\/studentpharmsaves\/module-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Me?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"smallsquares\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<h2>Module 1: Why Me?<\/h2>\n<h3>Why pharmacy staff?<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.media.unc.edu\/suicideprevention\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/04\/PharmacistConsultEdit.png\" alt=\"Pharmacist having conversation with customer\">\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\u201cI have talked many patients out of suicide and have just known that something was wrong because I&#8217;ve been in their shoes.\u201d<br>\n<div class=\"attribution\">-Community Pharmacy Staff Member<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Pharmacists are the most accessible health professionals in the United States.<sup id=\"popoverA\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">7<\/sup> With training, pharmacy staff can serve as gatekeepers who recognize suicide warning signs and refer individuals for assistance before they attempt suicide.<sup id=\"popoverB\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">1-6<\/sup>\n\n<\/p><p>Pharmacists are well acquainted with suicide\u2014or the threat of suicide\u2014in their practices:\n<\/p><ul>\n<li>A study in North Carolina found that <span class=\"emphasize\">1 in 5 <\/span>community pharmacy staff had been asked to advise on a fatal dose of medication.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><span class=\"emphasize\">22% <\/span>of pharmacy staff had patients request a lethal dose of medication.<sup id=\"popoverD\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">7<\/sup><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"emphasize\">22%<\/span> of pharmacy staff know a patient who has died by suicide.<sup id=\"popoverC\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">7<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Suicide can be prevented.<sup id=\"popoverE\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">1<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Pharmacy organizations agree. In 2019:<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>The American Society for Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) board stated that suicide prevention is a pharmacist\u2019s role.<\/li>\n<li>The Joint Commission recognized the role of pharmacists in suicide prevention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clearfix\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<h3>Medications and suicide<\/h3>\n\n<hr>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatleft\" style=\"max-width: 400px;\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.media.unc.edu\/suicideprevention\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/04\/pillsinhand.jpg\" alt=\"Pills\">More than <span class=\"emphasize\">140<\/span> medications are labeled for risk of suicide or have a potential for suicidal behavior. Several medications labeled for potential suicide risk are in the top 200 for highest dispensed volume. These medications include the entire class of antiepileptics, drugs used to treat urinary incontinence, smoking cessation agents, and an antibiotic.<sup id=\"popoverG\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">8<\/sup><\/p><p>In 2019, <span class=\"emphasize\">30% <\/span>of all suicides were carried out by poisoning, which included prescription overdose drug deaths.<sup id=\"popoverH\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">9<\/sup><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"clearfix\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<h3>Suicide in the United States<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<ul style=\"padding: 20px; background-image: url('https:\/\/wp.media.unc.edu\/suicideprevention\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/03\/usMap-01-1.png'); background-size: contain; background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: center;\">\n<li>Suicide is the <span class=\"emphasize\">10th<\/span> leading cause of death in the United States.<sup id=\"popoverK\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">11<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On average, there are <span class=\"emphasize\">132<\/span> suicides per day.<sup id=\"popoverL\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">11<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Men die by suicide <span class=\"emphasize\">3.6x<\/span> more often than women.<sup id=\"popoverM\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">11<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Veterans are<span class=\"emphasize\"> 2x<\/span> more likely to die by suicide than non-veterans.<sup id=\"popoverO\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">12<\/sup><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"emphasize\">74%<\/span> of medical office visits end with a prescription, meaning that many patients who are at risk of suicide visit pharmacies to pick up their prescriptions before their deaths.<sup id=\"popoverQ\" class=\"citation\" title=\"Citation\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-html=\"true\" data-placement=\"bottom\">13<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><strong>Click the buttons below if you are interested in learning how suicide rates vary by race\/ethnicity or age.<\/strong><\/center><\/p>\n<div id=\"accordion\" class=\"panel-group\" role=\"tablist\" aria-multiselectable=\"true\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-default\">\n<div id=\"headingOne\" class=\"panel-heading\" role=\"tab\">\n<h4 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" role=\"button\" href=\"#collapseOne\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapseOne\">Suicide rates by race\/ethnicity<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n<div id=\"collapseOne\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"headingOne\">\n<p style=\"max-width: 720px; display: block; margin: 0 auto\">In 2019, the highest U.S. age-adjusted suicide rate was among White Americans (15.67). The second-highest suicide rate among American Indians and Alaska Natives (13.64). Lower rates were observed among Black or African Americans (7.04) and Asians\/Pacific Islanders (7.04). Please note that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) records Hispanic origin separately from the primary racial or ethnic groups of White, Black, American Indian or Alaskan Native, and Asian or Pacific Islander, because individuals in all groups may also be Hispanic.
